Enlarged from the Catalogue I

1987

This is the first work in the Enlarged from the Catalogue series, which used an existing art catalogue as a springboard, resulting in an artwork or a full installation. This work used as its source a catalogue of the Pre-Columbian gold holdings of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and is composed of 15 frames containing concentric archival mats, with text silkscreened on the mats in gold, and words printed behind the glass in white. The large graphic is a blow-up of a pair of Pre-Columbian gold earrings from a collection at the Metropolitan. The texts refer to writings on pre-Columbian anthropology and collecting. The last image shows the work installed in a New York gallery office in the late 1980s, reflected in a Michelangelo Pistoletto mirror work hung on the opposite wall.

15 Frames, each 16"x20", paper mats, paint on mats and glass.

Collection: MAMCO, Geneva
